The Three Main Components of a Drug Detox Program

There are various kinds of drug detox programs that are conducted in various healthcare facilities across the world. Though it seems that all detox programs would be similar, there are differences.

But the main principles on which these detox programs work are on similar grounds. There are three main components of any drug detox program. These are as follows:-Preliminary Assessment

The first step would be to understand the extent of the drug addiction. For this, the person checking into the drug detox program will be quizzed about various points. The main intention here will be to know what drug or drugs has the person been using, for what period of time, with that kind of frequency, and whether continuously or intermittently. This is important for the treatment center to decide what kind of detox treatment must be employed. Based on this, they will give a preliminary idea to the patient on how many days they will have to stay at the drug detox facility.

During the detox, the patient will be kept as away from the drug as possible. This will cause the body of the person to react violently, which is known as withdrawal. It is the duty of the drug detox program to make this withdrawal as simple and painless as possible for the person. They will provide a host of antidepressants and painkillers to the patient in order to face this situation.

Counseling Therapy

After the main detox program, it is necessary to counsel the patient to ensure that there are no relapses and that the person embarks on a route to sober living. Counseling can be carried out for as many as six months after the main detox program.
